METROLOGY – A MEASURED CHOICE
The adoption of adequate measuring instruments, an attentive estimate of the characteristics related to the product, the all-round evaluation of the supplier are the keys to acquire a measuring system able to support the activities of whatever manufacturing company.
by Claudia Pirotta, Levio Valetti
The dimensional control represents the essential component of the productive process of any industrial manufactured good. Unlike what we might be induced to think, measuring operations are not necessarily concentrated at the end of the process but they must instead be distributed along the whole implementation course of the component or of the assembly. This allows identifying more precisely and rapidly the causes of possible non-compliances with the project specifications and intervening timely, to reduce rejects and related costs drastically.
The adoption of adequate measuring systems, therefore, must be guided and supported by an attentive evaluation of numerous characteristics related both to the product and to the process, among which it is worth mentioning: morphologic sizes and characteristics of the piece/product; tolerances to be verified; quantity of the pieces to be measured, of the characteristics to be assessed on each part and admissible check times; measuring in production or in metrological room; eventual integration of the measuring system with the production process; computerized design/production structure; sharing of resources and data among the various measuring systems; metrological competence of users; need of accessory services.
Through the analysis of this list of parameters, anyway not exhaustive, the user will be able to identify the most suitable measuring system, the related software applications and the hardware and software options that will allow the full integration with design and production systems.
The suitable choice of the measuring system typology is important and necessary, even more in a period, like the current one, of general economic uncertainty, in which the investments in industrial goods are more and more demanding for companies. Industrial investments presuppose a careful evaluation of the supplier’s costs/benefits, of its capability of granting the best product quality at the fair price (not necessarily the lowest in the market) and of adequately assisting the customer before and after the purchase, through a range of services and a global coverage making the measuring system a durable investment in time.

A SINGLE PLATFORM FOR DIMENSIONAL QUALITY
Among the essential components of a measuring system – mechanical structure, control, sensors and software – the software constitutes one of the key elements on which to base the choice of the most appropriate machine. The PC-DMIS EMS software suite, fully developed by Hexagon Metrology and available in combination with all the products of the Group, is the platform on which it is possible to build the whole network of dimensional quality of a company, no matter whether it is simple or complex in its process management. Core of the system is the PC-DMIS measuring software, which manages the measuring system, collects the detected data, processes them and produces numerical and graphical results easy to understand. The high flexibility of the software makes it suitable for any application sector and the customization of the results mirrors the user’s expectations. Its features of easy connection with all measuring systems offered by the Group is an important key for the optimization of the human resources dedicated to metrological activities: thanks to the software sharing, everybody can freely operate on each system, optimizing time and machine use skills. The opening of the measuring system towards the widest logics of business quality management is accomplished with additional modules of the EMS platform able to dialogue with the CAD systems used for design, from which the information about dimensional tolerances are directly drawn. Thanks to CAD systems, a constant connection is maintained to implement in real time any design review. Applications of advanced statistics for the analysis and storing of testing data are available.

SERVICES AND ASSISTANCE IN THE FOREFRONT
Last, but not least, discriminating element in the choice of a measuring system is the producer’s capability of offering a global, efficient and effective coverage of services and assistance. Among the added values ascribed to the industrial investment good rank its sustainability, the possibility of rapidly obtaining technical and applicative assistance, the availability of periodical upgrading of the system to maintain it suitable for the evolution of industrial and productive technologies and a real partnership relationship between supplier and user. Hexagon Metrology has invested, and goes on investing, significant human and technological resources to grant the best quality of services that, thanks to the geographical distribution of the Group, can offer an exhaustive presence on a global and local scale, to the full benefit of those users that operate on the international market, too.
A GLOBAL REALITY
Hexagon Metrology, leader Swedish multinational in the sector of industrial metrology, in the last 13 years has fulfilled the ambitious project of establishing the biggest world group of companies producing dimensional measuring systems, through the takeover of primary brands in the sector like DEA, Leitz, Leica Geosystems, ROMER and several others. The strong presence on the market of each brand and the product variety that they offer have allowed the creation of a global reality with the widest product range currently available, besides a sale, after sale and service net diffusely spread in the five continents and a very strong orientation to innovation.
The products offered by the Group range from simple manual instruments to portable measuring systems (articulated arms for touch measuring and laser scanning, laser trackers and sensors for photogrammetry), to standard coordinate measuring machines of medium, high and very high precision for metrological room and industrial environment, to the horizontal-arm solutions for measuring bodyworks, to the big-size machines for the dimensional control of aeronautical, shipbuilding and heavy industry components. Among the most recent developments, to which the multinational pays utmost attention, we find the integration of photogrammetry sensors on industrial robots that, thanks to the significant technological evolution of vision systems in use (they too property of the Group), represents one of the bearing pillars of the future of industrial metrology for automotive applications, and not only.
