The Peeks by Victrex can be transversally used in the industry world thanks to the exceptional profile of performances and the various compliances that make them suitable also for the most difficult sectors.
THE MATERIAL OF DREAMS
Our daily life swarms of objects. We do not always recognize the importance of the raw materials with which they are made. Almost never we imagine the potentialities of "materials" in everyday life: including that "material of dreams " itself with which, according to Shakespeare, all of us are made. A journey through Victrex and everything seems clearer. The English multinational, since the beginning of its production activity has contributed, together with its customers, in accomplishing a real revolution in the world of plastic materials, thanks to some of the most versatile available polyketones, characterized by high thermal resistance and very special performances.

Today the Victrex® Peek polymer is used in several innovations that characterize different sectors: from automotive to electronics, from aerospace to semiconductors, from medical to food processing and textile and many others, always researching new ways to improve the product performances.
Victrex, English multinational, is the biggest producer in the world of materials made of highly performing polyaryletherketones.
Its history starts just with the original patent of Peek, accomplished in November 1978 in England: at that age, the production of this material belonged to one of the divisions of ICI and had small sizes. In 1993 the Peek business (through a Buy Out management) is sold and so the company Victrex was established, today Victrex Polymer Solutions, division of Victrex plc.
Since then, the polymer use has rapidly diffused all over the world, at the beginning in Western Europe and in the United States. When the activity became global, Victrex decided to be present also in Japan and, in the last ten years, it has reached China. At present the company is continuing its expansion towards markets with high growth rate, such as India, Russia and Brazil.
Listed at the Stock Exchange at the LSE, the company employs over 500 people and operates through two productive sites that rank among the most advanced in the world, with an overall capacity of 4,300 t and a total sold in 2011 amounting to 2,860 t, scoring an increment, compared to the previous year, of +13%. The overall 2011 turnover reached about 215 million pounds. Victrex has recently announced its intention of implementing a new production plant, to face up to the future market demands.
COMMITTED TO FAVOURING THE GROWTH
“Thanks to the deep knowledge of the market, the over thirty year experience and, most of all, dealing with high technological level products, the company focuses on the identification of the real needs of the various industrial fields as well as on the requisites of new products and applications, in order to develop effective solutions and able to bring real advantages”, states Reinhard Veljovic’, Market Development Manager Italy for Victrex Polymer Solution, who has been taking care of the Italian market for over ten years.
This trend has led Victrex to rely on a very wide portfolio of polyaryiletherketones that, over the last years, has more than doubled. In addition to dozens of mixtures and compound, the state-of-the-art grades are Victrex HT, featuring high thermal resistance, (glass transition temperature: 157 °C – melting temperature: 374 °C) and Victrex ST, a product line intended for more difficult application contexts and used wherever a combination of high thermal resistance, mechanical performances and dimensional stability is requested. The polymer Victrex Peek, in addition to the formats in granules and in powder, is available also in the form of semi-finished products, fibres, films (Aptiv®), coatings (Vicote®) and of light and durable pipes (Victrex Pipes™).
The Peeks by Victrex can be transversally used in the industry world thanks to the exceptional profile of performances and the various compliances that make them suitable also for the most difficult sectors. “Besides the car market that remains one of our core-business, we have recently focused on the markets of energy and aerospace. Our materials are also present in thousands of applications and industrial components, as well as in the medical, electronics, food processing and drink industry”, added Veljovic’.
“We have built the development centres dedicated to polyketones that rank among the most complete ones on an international scale, able to offer the most exhaustive specifications of test materials and services. We make use of on-site productive resources able to support customers in the test and use phases of the existing fixtures to aid them in the process of transposition from design to productive phase. A centralized logistic system and the capillarity of warehouses dedicated to the local distribution allow us to carry out shipments worldwide in seven working days”.
PRODUCT QUALITY, LIFE QUALITY
Victrex is constantly committed to improving the product quality, with dedicated investments. “Always attentive to safety, health and environment, the company starts from the assumption that these issues go hand in hand with good business results. This approach is concretized in the continuous improvement of the risk management, in fixing targets, in training, in assuring the involvement of our employees, in monitoring, in controls and overhauls”, explains Veljovic’.
As acknowledgement of the results obtained in health and safety matters, Victrex has won, for over ten years, the prestigious prize President Award by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).
All the production is ISO 9001:2000 certified, but the quality concept for the multinational is very variegated. It means in fact to provide fast answers, usually within 24 hours, “just in time” supplies (within 7 working days), besides specific services of training on materials, on transformation technologies with dedicated 360° support, starting from the specifications of the most suitable material, passing through complete tests, the process and up to the analysis of eventual problems in mass productions.
“Victrex works in effective way on the quality of the products manufactured by its customers, intervening on sensitive parameters, and it can concretely improve the product performances,” states Veljovic’.
MORE LIGHTNESS AND FLEXIBILITY, FEWER COSTS
We might say that the creativity of Victrex goes hand in hand with the proximity to customers and the market knowledge. The industry moves on different trend lines that notably depend on materials, real protagonists of a changing world, able to make the difference on rising themes, which Veljovic’ mainly identifies “in the lightening and miniaturization of components, replacing metals often deemed too heavy, as well as the service life and the resistance of devices that need materials with high mechanical and wear resistance, besides more and more extreme thermal performances, required for instance in lead-free welding processes. All that without obviously forgetting costs.”
Victrex can rely on three technical centres dedicated to innovation that operate on the field and avail themselves of multi-disciplinary teams that are constantly evolving and that are presently composed by 50 experts able to speak different languages and specialized in the most up-to-date technologies of characterization, analysis and process equipment.
Each development centre, in Great Britain, China and Japan, is provided with very advanced fixtures and technical skills suitable for the prerogatives of local customers, market applications and requests. “Working with such instruments and in strict contact with customers, processors and end-users all over the world, it is possible to solve the eventual uncertainties concerning a project and, in many cases, to pave the way to new real alternatives”, ends Veljovic’.
