Fritz Studer AG, fondata esattamente un secolo fa, è oggi leader mondiale per la rettifica universale, esterna, cilindrica interna e non cilindrica. Il 2012 è stato un anno di ricorrenze importanti per la Studer. Esattamente un secolo fa a Steffisburg, nel distretto di Thun, il trentatreenne Fritz Studer fondò una piccola officina meccanica. L’idea che lo portò a costruire la sua prima rettificatrice cilindrica fu tanto semplice quanto geniale: la produzione di componenti ad alta precisione richiedeva una macchina altrettanto precisa, così il giovane imprenditore decise di costruirsela da solo. Ebbe inizio una storia di affermazioni e di successi che ha attraversato un secolo: oggi il marchio Studer è riconosciuto quale leader mondiale, dal punto di vista tecnico e di mercato, delle lavorazioni di rettifica.
SOLUZIONI AVANZATE
“Lavoriamo pezzi piccoli e di medie dimensioni, che vengono utilizzati per lo più nei settori degli utensili, dell’automotive, dell’aerospaziale, dell’idraulica, dell’elettronica e del medicale”, spiega Michael Horn, Direttore Generale della Fritz Studer AG. “Proponiamo un diversificato e ampio assortimento di macchine e tecnologie innovative. Accanto alla disponibilità di una soluzione completa e su misura per ogni operazione di rettifica, il cliente può avvalersi anche delle nostre abilità e competenze riguardo all’intero processo di produzione. Studer infatti fornisce sistemi software e hardware specifici, unitamente a una vasta gamma di servizi pre e post vendita. Integrare l’alta qualità del prodotto con un servizio efficiente è un valore aggiunto fondamentale nella politica della nostra azienda”, prosegue Horn. “Il nostro principale interesse è rispondere adeguatamente alle richieste dell'utilizzatore e ogni nostra mossa strategica è fondata su quest’idea. TRE GENERAZIONI NELL’ARTE DELLA RETTIFICA
All'inizio degli anni Trenta l'officina individuale di Fritz Studer diventò un’azienda con un organico di 36 collaboratori. In quel periodo entrò in azienda anche il figlio del fondatore, Alfred, artefice, nel 1931, delle prime esportazioni di macchine Studer. Mentre Alfred si dedicò al potenziamento di un'organizzazione di vendita di portata mondiale, il suo successore Marc si dedicò alla cura di un nuovo accattivante design per le macchine Studer, che, a partire dal 1985 si contraddistinguono per l'inconfonibile combinazione cromatica di bordeaux e bianco. È di quegli anni anche l’ampliamento della gamma di prodotti: dalle rettificatrici cilindriche convenzionali alle rettificatrici cilindriche CNC per pezzi di piccole e medie dimensioni. Per la produzione in grandi serie sono state sviluppate macchine monouso, con cicli di rettifica ottimizzati ed estrema disponibilità, mentre per la lavorazione dura-fine è stata progettata e costruita una macchina per la lavorazione combinata, al fine di razionalizzare e ottimizzare i processi. In un secolo di storia aziendale, dal 1912 ad oggi, sono oltre 21.000 le rettificatrici Studer fornite alle aziende di tutto il mondo.
IL PRESENTE, UNA TECNOLOGIA ALL’AVANGUARDIA
Dal 1994, allo scopo di competere con la concorrenza proveniente da Giappone e Stati Uniti, Fritz Studer AG è entrata a far parte - insieme ad altre società operanti nella rettifica d’utensili, in piano, di profili e nella rettifica cilindrica - del Gruppo Schleifring, a sua volta parte integrante del gruppo industriale Körber. Studer impiega oggi circa 800 persone e ha un fatturato annuo di oltre 200 millioni di franchi svizzeri. Nel 2011, grazie a una corretta valutazione della crisi economica globale degli anni precedenti, Studer ha registrato un incremento degli ordini di circa il 25% rispetto all’anno precedente.
“Grazie al nostro portafoglio diversificato di prodotti, i prossimi anni dovrebbero proseguire sulla scia del successo del 2011. Per poter continuare con questo trend è necessario da una parte poter contare su collaboratori capaci e dall'altra servirsi di tecnologia all'avanguardia durante i processi realizzativi. Ne è un esempio Studer PuLs (Präzision und Leidenschaft - Precisione e Passione), procedura gestionale orientata all'eliminazione degli sprechi e all'ottimizzazione della struttura, sempre più attenta alle necessità del cliente. Questi concetti rappresentano l'essenza di una filosofia aziendale in grado di apportare vantaggi in tutte le aree”, afferma Horn.
Un altro esempio della visione lungimirante di Studer è “Label Bluecompetence”, la metodologia seguita per ridurre sensibilmente l'emissione di CO2 nella costruzione e messa in funzione delle sue macchine. Per seguire questo approccio, Studer ha identificato tutte le possibili fonti di consumo di una rettificatrice, ricercando le soluzioni più utili e innovative per contenerle. “Nel nostro Centro Applicativo, grazie a infrastrutture modernissime, oltre 80, tra ingegneri e tecnici, si occupano in azienda delle problematiche energetiche e ambientali”.
INNOVAZIONE PER COMPETERE
“Nonostante le contingenti difficoltà economiche dei mercati, Studer prevede per i prossimi anni un ulteriore incremento degli ordini, frutto di una crescita. Lo sguardo è rivolto in modo attento al buon andamento dei Paesi asiatici, dove intendiamo rafforzare la nostra presenza, senza tuttavia trascurare i Paesi europei. Le altre direzioni della nostra strategia di sviluppo perseguono l’incremento e l’espansione delle soluzioni software e la combinazione in una stessa macchina di differenti processi di lavorazione. È una strada che abbiamo già interpreso e che ha avuto un buon riscontro: per esempio la macchina per la lavorazione combinata S242 coniuga in modo ottimale le tecnologie della rettifica e della tornitura e, grazie al suo concetto costruttivo, è all’altezza di entrambi i compiti senza alcun compromesso”, spiega Horn.
Circa 120 persone lavorano nel dipartimento di Ricerca&Sviluppo che si occupa di hardware e software, applicazioni e sistemi, ingegneria, elettronica, test e prove di rettifica. “In Studer non risparmiamo sforzi ed energie per lanciare sul mercato soluzioni sempre nuove. La tecnologia e la competenza sono evidenziate da oltre 400 prove di rettifica eseguite grazie al Customer Center e al Tech Center. Grazie a tutto ciò possiamo assicurare ai nostri clienti un continuo miglioramento tecnologico: tra alcuni anni le nostre macchine saranno costruite in modo ancora più semplice e dinamico, saranno più 'intelligenti' e consumeranno meno energia”, conclude Horn.

2012 has been a year of important anniversaries for Studer. Exactly one century ago in Steffisburg, in the Thun district, the thirty years old Fritz Studer established a small mechanical workshop. The idea that led him to manufacture his first cylindrical grinder was as simple as genial: the production of high-precision components required an equally precise machine, therefore the young entrepreneur decided to manufacture it on his own. It so started a history of achievements and successes that has been lasting for a century: today the Studer brand is acknowledged as world leader, from the technical and market point of view, in grinding machining.
ADVANCED SOLUTIONS
“We machine small and medium-size pieces, which are mainly used in the sectors of tools, automotive, aerospace, hydraulics, electronics and medical”, explains Michael Horn, General Manager of Fritz Studer AG. “We propose a diversified and wide range of innovative machines and technologies. Besides the availability of a complete and tailor-made solution for each grinding operation, the customer can also avail itself of our skills and competencies concerning the whole production process. Studer supplies in fact specific software and hardware systems, coupled with a broad array of pre and after sale services. The integration of the high product quality with an efficient service is a fundamental added value in the policy of our company”, adds Horn. “Our main target is to meet adequately the user’s requests and each of our strategic moves is based on this idea. Thanks to our presence worldwide, we are close to customers’ needs, focusing our mission on the commitment to satisfy them. THREE GENERATIONS IN THE ART OF GRINDING
At the beginning of the Thirties the single-man workshop of Fritz Studer became a firm with a staff of 36 collaborators. In that period also the founder’s son joined the company, Alfred, author, in 1931, of the first exports of Studer machines. While Alfred devoted himself to the development of a global-level sales organization, his successor Marc took care of a new attractive design for Studer machines that, starting from 1985, stand out for the unique colour combination of burgundy and white. Also the widening of the product range dates back to those years: from standard cylindrical grinding machines to the cylindrical CNC machines for small and medium-size pieces. They have developed single-use machines for the mass production, with optimized grinding cycles and great reliability, while for the hard-fine machining they have designed and manufactured a machine for combined machining, in order to rationalize and optimize processes. In one century of company history, since 1912 until today, more than 21,000 Studer grinding machines have been supplied to companies all over the world.
THE PRESENT, A CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY
Since 1994, in order to compete with the competitors coming from Japan and United States, Fritz Studer AG has joined – together with other enterprises operating in the tool, surface, profile and cylindrical grinding – Schleifring Group, in its turn integral part of the industrial group Körber. Today Studer employs about 800 people and reaches a yearly turnover of over 200 million Swiss Francs. In 2011, thanks to a correct evaluation of the global economic crisis of the previous years, Studer scored an order increase by about 25% versus the previous year.
“Thanks to our diversified product portfolio, next years are expected to continue in the wake of the success that characterized the 2011-year. To be able to go on with this trend, on one hand it is necessary to rely on skillful collaborators and on the other hand to avail ourselves of cutting-edge technology during manufacturing processes. An example of it is represented by Studer PuLs (Präzision und Leidenschaft – Precision and Passion), management procedure oriented to the elimination of wastes and to the optimization of the structure, which pays increasing attention to customers’ requirements. These concepts represent the essence of a philosophy able to bring benefits in all areas”, states Horn.
Another example of the farsighted vision of Studer is “Label Bluecompetence”, the methodology followed to notably reduce the emission of CO2 in the manufacturing and commissioning of its machines. To comply with this approach, Studer has identified all possible sources of consumption of a grinding machine, researching the most useful and innovative solutions to reduce them. “In our Application Centre, thanks to modern infrastructures, a team of more than 80 engineers and technicians work at energy and environmental problems inside the company”.
INNOVATION TO COMPETE
“Despite the contingent economic difficulties of markets, Studer foresees a further order rise in the next years, fruit of a growth. The gaze is so attentively focused on the good trend of Asian Countries, where we are going to strengthen our presence, without however neglecting European Countries. The other directions of our development strategy pursue the increment and the expansion of software solutions and the combination of different machining processes on the same machine. It is a way that we have already undertaken and that has given good results: for instance, the machine for combined machining S242 matches grinding and turning technologies in excellent way and, thanks to its structural concept, is up to both tasks without any compromise”, explains Horn.
About 120 people work in the Research&Development Department that takes care of hardware and software, applications and systems, engineering, electronics, grinding tests and trials. “At Studer we lavish effort and energies to launch constantly new solutions on the market. Technology and competence are highlighted by over 400 grinding tests executed thanks to the Customer Center and to the Tech Center. Thanks to all that we can assure a continuous technological improvement to our customers: in some years our machines will be produced in even simpler and more dynamic way, they will be “smarter” and they will consume less energy”, ends Horn.
