DESIGN – THE DISCREET CHARM OF PRAGMATISM
Last November, he joined the Eplan Software & Service team, and in December he became Country Manager. His task is to manage the Italian subsidiary of the German corporation that serves more than 35,000 customers all over the world with advanced solutions for electrical and fluid design of machinery and plants. Few months after his settlement, we asked Stefano Casazza to tell us something about his challenges and the goals to achieve, as well as the tools that he is planning to use to face this new adventure with enthusiasm and determination.

Take some 20 years of experience acquired in the PLM market, dealing with direct and indirect sales in small, medium and big companies including Autodesk and Siemens PLM Software. Add a huge amount of pragmatism and curiosity. A pinch of humbleness. Let it settle for a few months. That’s the secret recipe of Stefano Casazza, Country Manager for the Italian market of Eplan Software & Service (www.eplan.it) since last December, engaged to improve the company’s positioning in the market.
Q. What has driven you to take up such a challenging task and what are your goals?
A. This company has been developing engineering solutions for over 25 years, in the name of innovation and constant development. Over 35,000 customers of all sizes use our software solutions all over the world, every day and in different industries. Seven German subsidiaries and offices in more than 50 countries give a clear idea of the strength and complexity of this organization. Needless to say that, when I was asked to manage the Italian subsidiary of this corporation, I immediately considered it an excellent opportunity. However, it is less obvious to explain the reason why I considered it a challenge as well. Today, Eplan has a solid position in the Italian market, but we still have wide margins of improvement. With the technology offer we are providing, we can achieve significantly higher turnover compared to the current result, which is approximately 3.5 million euros. We offer very high quality products, in compliance with global standards, a feature that makes us the perfect partner for all the Italian companies that export their products abroad. And we are the only vendor in our industry to offer such a wide and complete range of software and services. Although electrical CAD represents our “historical” core business, we can do much more: we help companies optimize processes, we develop solutions based on mechatronics design software and we implement custom CAD, PDM, PLM solutions and ERP interfaces in order to accelerate the design cycle and reduce time-to-market. None of our competitors can offer the same complete approach. We must enhance our specific key strengths in the market.
Q. What are the strategies to promote the growth of the Group on the Italian market?
A. Eplan’s mission is to help customers become more efficient in engineering activities, offering them not only a software solution but also support, continuity and investment security. In this perspective, the keyword is “integration”, with solutions that are not only limited to the electrical design department, but that also allow to meet the requirements of design and detailed engineering, up to the assembly, production and post-sales services. We must be able to undergo this transformation, also for communication and marketing: Eplan does not only offer wiring diagrams, but also an integrated automation platform.
We also need to improve the service area, strengthening direct relationships with customers and paying higher attention to their requirements and their satisfaction. For this reason, I’ve started to reorganize the sales network that – before my arrival – exclusively consisted of multi-brand agents, introducing and training internal salespeople.
Then, we need to increasingly focus our attention on technical assistance: all customers renewing their software update agreement on a yearly basis are entitled to quick and accurate service, helping them solve their problems rapidly, often online, and clear up any doubts or requests.
Q. Which are the difficulties you face to achieve these goals?
A. Today, innovation requires an accurate analysis of market signals and the capacity to link together different elements with a long-term vision. It is no longer enough to make a technology solution available in the market. Customers have to ‘digest it’ culturally, make it their own, give it an understandable meaning. This means that companies have to be willing to implement our software, make workflow analysis, invest in training, reconsider and redesign the whole process, redefine objectives. This is the only way for them to obtain real and long-term benefits from the purchase of one of our products. But at that point, the difference will be remarkable.
Today’s economy encourages light weight, customization, the capacity to integrate highly differentiated components and to master complexity. We provide all those who are willing to pursue these goals with valuable support. It’s a complicated way, but fascinating and future-proof.
