CONTRIBUIRE ALL’EFFICIENZA DEI PROCESSI PRODUTTIVI

“Focus on training means to acknowledge the value of its employees to promote the well being of the company”, states Andrea Bianchi, Managing Director of HEIDENHAIN Italiana.
AUTOMATION – ACKNOWLEDGING THE ADDED VALUE
Since a long time HEIDENHAIN (www.heidenhain.it) promotes the integration of production processes in the company network to achieve transparent processes and optimise the manufacturing flows. Solutions like “Connected Machining” can meet the growing demand for increased productivity and flexibility, keeping a watchful eye on Safety and Security aspects. We discuss it with Andrea Bianchi, Managing Director of HEIDENHAIN Italiana.
SHARPEN THE ACTION AND REACTION ABILITY
To maintain the leadership, nowadays the strategic decisions must be taken tracking an ever-widening set of ever-changing factors. Of similar importance is to have a fair idea of the “time” variable: the increased volatility in the conditions requires to sharpen the action and reaction ability.
“Among multiple factors, I recognise three mains: innovation, quality of service, and learning. Innovation means to be pioneers, understand the trends before they decay. Give value to the quality of service is believing in shared goals and follow them, recognising that the ‘time’ factor is crucial for the customer. Focus on training, especially on life long learning, means, first of all, acknowledging the value of employees to promote the well being of the company”, states Bianchi. Such values, at the base of HEIDENHAIN’s work, encouraged decades ago by Dr Johannes Heidenhain, have always been preserved during the time and today still drive the business strategies.
INTEGRATION BETWEEN PRODUCTION CHAINS
Demand for technology is particularly lively in the automotive (in Italy also on the motorcycle), aerospace and medical sectors, together with the energy sector thanks to the growing importance of environmental concern.
Bianchi observes: “It is fascinating to see how the trend of integration between production chains, also located in different countries, intensifies. It is no coincidence that HEIDENHAIN Italiana chose to showcase its technology in the last trade shows through production chains involving the leading players on the market”. The technological demand moves towards an increasing integration of production processes to achieve further competitiveness. Anyway, the request of flexibility is still high to meet the demands of diverse target groups, such as the automotive sector.
CONTRIBUTE TO THE EFFICIENCY OF PRODUCTION PROCESSES
Environmental impact of production and energy saving are among the most current topics. HEIDENHAIN has activated within the company and its production sites long ago on this subject. Year by year the environmental policy is defined aiming at the reduction of environmental footprint (rational use of commodities, efficiency of energy consumption, emission reduction…) as part of a continuous improvement process made possible by the use of methods and processes with the most advanced technologies. The environmental program fulfils standards and rules and, if the company recognises it as an economic benefit, the standards become even higher. HEIDENHAIN is pursuing sustainable development with long-term economic, ecological, and social goals. One can track down all these principles in the manufactured devices: long-life devices, designed to be recycled, accomplishing the safety standards to protect the users and the systems where they are installed. Their reliability makes a significant contribution to the efficiency of production systems.

All the information about the state and the quality of the workpiece, from the machine must return to the process chain.
RENOVATING PLANTS AND INCREASED COMPETITIVITY
Reflecting on the situation on the markets and future goals, Bianchi highlights: “The European market is experiencing a stabilisation phase but also paying a caution attention to Asian countries, very strong in the offer of entry-level solutions of sufficient quality for the general purpose machining”. According to Bianchi, in Italy, the awakening phase may strongly benefit from the government policies promoting the evolution from an Industry 4.0 perspective. The Italian market may reach interesting numbers because of the need to remedy the obsolescence of machinery that statistics have highlighted. One of the positive results of the renovation is thus the increased competitivity on international markets.
FROM THE SPECIFIC TO THE GENERAL
HEIDENHAIN’s key to the success can be summed up in a picture: “To bridge the smaller and the bigger, the specific, and the general”. Although undertaking continuous growth processes, the company has performed the innovation keeping internally all the R&D activities and has developed all productive processes directly. Such verticality ensures the constant control on the quality of products from each single part. The quality is very high up to details, from the identification of materials to the choice of packaging to ensure each device is delivered intact worldwide, ready to install. High quality can also be found in the reliability and professionalism of HEIDENHAIN’s staff that offers global support by adjusting the assistance according to the partner’s needs, whether it be a micro business or a multinational company.
HUMAN-MACHINE INTERATION
The route the fourth industrial revolution has taken (however, one already talks about the fifth) opened many subjects and perspectives. One has been caught by digital frenzy that needs somehow to be channeled, meanwhile, one has to take note of the implications that the revolution brought. Above all is the role of humans within organisations: “Machines relieved us from heavy and arduous and repetitive activities, and partially from intellectual ones, dramatically enhancing working conditions. However, it is necessary to take action immediately to continue promoting the human-machine interaction, acknowledge the central role of humans within each organisation, and eventually begin projects on adapting and reinforcing the competencies, supported by the project to develop cross-cutting abilities”.
Each revolution leads to changes: the difference is that at present changes happen more and more early and the players need to be able to react “in real time”.
CONNECTED MACHINING
With the motto “Connecting systems for intelligent production”, HEIDENHAIN aims to make usable the workshop and its know-how on the machine, through the numerical control. From the machine the workpiece comes to life: to the machine all the information must converge and there, all the crucial information about the state and the quality of workpiece must go back to the IT production systems, i.e. to the process chain.
Within the framework of Hannover live, HEIDENHAIN shows the easy and customizable integration of the digital and universal order management within the intelligent production by the TNC numerical controls and package of functions Connected Machining. Across the entire exhibition district, 20 machines from various manufacturers are connected via Connected Machining to the HEIDENHAIN’s booth. Here, the State Monitor Software gives an overview of all connected machines, their real-time operating status, and many other details about the ongoing process.
At the VDW “Industrie 4.0 area” booth, together with the partners in the CAM, virtual machines, pre-setting and tool management, and mechanical engineering segments, HEIDENHAIN explains how the user can plan and produce a part in paperless mode. The explanation is carried out with the support of Connected Machining and the numerical control TNC, by running a real application.
