Almeno a livello industriale”.
TECNOLOGIA E COMPETENZA
“E, last but not least, la passione per l’innovazione.
E come è andata? “Benissimo.
A RELIABLE PARTNER
A manufacturer of quick clamping systems based in Locate di Triulzi near Milano, Speedy Block is a leading European brand in this industry. Their products are adopted by major companies in welding, mechanical construction and automation. What’s the secret of 60-year-long success? A focus on innovation that is part of the genome of an entire family.

The outline of the Speedy Block logo is a key. Nothing could be more fitting and auspicious for a specialist of clamping equipment. “But if you look closer, you will also see two “G’s”. It’s my grandfather’s initials, Ginepro Grisendi, who founded his mechanical workshop in 1948”, says Alexa Grisendi, Communication & Marketing Manager. “The brand was designed and registered in 1971 by his children, two years after his death. That’s when the company defined its mission: while grandpa’s workshop mainly produced and repaired molds and dies as subcontractor, his sons started to make their own products and specialized in the design, development, manufacturing and sales of quick clamping systems. Carlo, Walter and Alberto Grisendi realized that the market required those devices and there would be ample margins for growth, because there were no manufacturers in Italy. At least on an industrial scale”. Their intuition soon turned out to be right. The first units were built in 1972. The range included a small portion of the current vertical and horizontal series, models that are still sold around the world by the Grisendi family. Over the years, these two series have been completed by five more: stainless steel, Long Life, pneumatic, straight line and latch.
TECHNOLOGY AND EXPERTISE
From Ginepro, the founder, to his children and grandchildren. This picture of three generations ‘at work’ maybe makes it easier to understand how the small-medium size of family companies in Italy is an essential asset for the country.
We asked Alberto Grisendi, Alexa’s father and current General Manager. “Our story is about unity, love and strong family ties. We have over 60-year experience, six decades we have always dedicated to help companies work better and safer. We have focused on quality, as a warranty for the most demanding customers”.
All stages from production to sales are monitored using leading-edge instruments, proven methods, processes and controls based on longstanding experience. The mechanical workshop is well furnished with machines and equipment that can meet the requirements of all kinds of customers. “Our company, though over 60, is still modern and dynamic, because we are keen on renovation and update. We are a ‘learning organization’, willing to do well what we can do, constantly improving our products. In this respect, human resources substantially contribute to identify and achieve more and more ambitious goals, in order to meet and anticipate market demands”.
But what are the key strengths of Speedy Block? “Quality warranty (certified to ISO 9001 since 1994) and fast delivery time, even for large volumes, as the result of our automated production system, effective control and testing, accurate management of raw materials and incoming goods. Our products are always available thanks to a constant replenishment of our stocks; from order reception to delivery, it takes 24 to 48 hours, with a delivery service at competitive prices”, states the General Manager. “And, last but not least, we have passion for innovation. That’s what I inherited from my father, and I think I have handed it down to my children”.
Besides constantly improving production and workplace conditions to safeguard their staff’s health, Speedy Block is highly sensitive to environmental impact and energy saving, using high-efficiency equipment and plants. As a result, the company has dramatically cut carbon dioxide emissions, according to eco-sustainability principles. Also in this respect, it is a model to be imitated.
QUALITY SOLUTIONS
Speedy Block has pursued its passion for technological innovation even in the past few years, despite the crisis. “Yes. We have ‘exploited’ the worst period of the crisis, in 2009, to purchase raw materials at cheaper prices. It was an investment that, according to common sense, might have been risky, considering the general situation. Instead, we thought it was forward-looking. We have filled up an entire warehouse and we are still using those materials, which are much more expensive now; and furthermore, we can respond quickly to customer orders without increasing our prices”.
What about the product range? “We have continued to design, manufacture and patent new systems. The latest creation by Grisendi is T5, a model of the latch series. It features an additional safety device, a release button you have to push before you can open the clamp. This makes it particularly suitable for machines subject to strong vibration or stress, because it is virtually impossible for the clamp to open accidentally”, Grisendi explains. “Moreover, this product only requires one hand to operate, and that’s totally new”.
“We have also identified a new application field and developed dedicated tools. Models 1500/T2S and 1510/T2S are specifically designed and manufactured for the clamping requirements of rotational molds. Made of high-quality welding steel, these clamps can be welded instead of bolted to the mold, with clear time benefits”. “In our industry, keeping prices low is an essential requirement. That’s why, until we entered this market segment, handicraft clamping systems were used, economical but very weak and faulty. Speedy Block has been able to produce higher quality devices at competitive prices”. And the result? “Excellent. We have sold many units to mold makers and final users of molds. Normally, when we introduce a new product, it takes three years before we can sell it in significant volumes. In this case, instead, having no competitors at all, we have sold quickly. But we are not stopping here. Very soon, we are setting up a new fully automated warehouse, so we will be even more flexible and effective on the market”.
