Circa 10 anni prima che il controllo numerico cominciasse a muovere i primi passi sul mercato, NUM (www.num.com) anticipò tutti sviluppando il suo primo CNC. Era il 1961 e da allora l’azienda è sempre riuscita a mantenere la sua posizione come leader tecnologico in questo segmento. Passo dopo passo, ha realizzato soluzioni innovative, diventando un partner affidabile per ogni impresa alla ricerca di soluzioni innovative. “Disponiamo della gamma completa di tecnologia CNC: comandi, azionamenti e motori”, spiega Massimiliano Menegotto, Managing Director & CTO del Gruppo. Oggi NUM è rinomata come leader in diversi segmenti applicativi: da quello delle macchine specializzate per la rettifica d’utensili a quello delle macchine per la lavorazione del legno, dal segmento delle dentatrici a quello dei transfer rotanti. “La nostra forza come specialisti inizia là dove finisce quella di molti: in una spiccata competenza applicativa nel settore delle macchine da produzione a controllo CNC. LA VERA INNOVAZIONE HA ORIGINE DALLE IDEE
L’abilità e la ricerca di personalizzazione sono sicuramente da annoverare tra i punti di forza di NUM rispetto a competitor che operano nello stesso segmento. I sistemi aperti di NUM, grazie anche alla struttura decentralizzata di R&D che mette a disposizione personale tecnico qualificato in qualsiasi parte del mondo, consentono di personalizzare il software CNC per i costruttori di macchine utensili speciali, anche su macchine singole. “In pratica, il nostro staff entra a far parte del reparto Ricerca & Sviluppo del cliente e in tal modo aiuta il costruttore di macchine utensili a guadagnare un vantaggio unico sulla concorrenza”, spiega Menegotto. Grazie a tale approccio con il “cliente-partner”, NUM ha ben chiare le richieste e le sfide che le tecnologie di controllo nel settore delle macchine utensili proporranno in futuro, fattore che permette all’impresa di migliorare con costanza e continuità il proprio programma di R&D.

PRESENZA INTERNAZIONALE
Con headquarter a Teufen, in Svizzera, NUM è un'azienda internazionale che ha sedi tecnico-commerciali in tutto il mondo: una negli Stati Uniti, 4 in Asia, di cui appena inaugurata a Seoul, 10 in Europa. “Siamo presenti in tutti i più importanti Paesi europei: Germania, Austria, Gran Bretagna, Francia, Spagna, Italia”, spiega Marco Battistotti, direttore del Technology Center di NUM. “A Cuggiono, in provincia di Milano, è situata l’unica sede produttiva di tutto il Gruppo. Qui lavora anche una grossa parte del nostro personale dedicato alla R&D, ben 17 persone che si occupano di azionamenti, motori e dal 2009 anche delle sviluppo real-time del controllo numerico. In Svizzera invece sono specializzati in PLC e interfaccia uomo-macchina, mentre un altro gruppo è dedicato esclusivamente alla sviluppo del software NUMROTO per il settore delle affilatrici di utensili. In totale nel Gruppo ci sono circa 45 persone in R&D, senza contare gli ingegneri di applicazione, che customizzano i nostri prodotti in collaborazione con i clienti”.

SOLUZIONI PERSONALIZZATE
“Quando si tratta di ottimizzare prodotti complessi come quelli utilizzati per l'automazione di macchine utensili, non basta combinare componenti potenti, quali macchine, sistemi di controllo CNC, azionamenti, motori e sistemi di misura”, continua Fabio Pezzoni, Operational Manager e COO. “Affinché una soluzione si riveli un investimento redditizio occorre un software che sia perfettamente calibrato sui processi di produzione specifici e un team di ingegneri esperti con una competenza polivalente che conosca dettagliatamente le esigenze specifiche del settore di applicazione e del cliente e persegua un obiettivo chiaro: ottimizzare il processo di produzione nel suo complesso e garantirlo per anni con la tecnologia più avanzata e un supporto tecnico perfetto. NUM soddisfa tutte queste condizioni: segue e accompagna i propri clienti dallo sviluppo del progetto alla messa in funzione e collaudo, fino all'assistenza tecnica garantita per tutta la vita del prodotto. Basti pensare che effettuiamo ancora lavori di manutenzione su sistemi realizzati e venduti 25 anni fa: segno non solo dell’affidabilità delle nostre soluzioni, ma anche della continuità che, grazie alla nostra storia decennale, riusciamo a garantire alle aziende”.

ARCHITETTURE DI SICUREZZA
“In questo momento, stiamo lavorando molto nell'ambito della sicurezza funzionale: abbiamo sviluppato una nuova architettura ancora più efficiente, che semplifica il cablaggio e riduce notevolmente il numero di connessioni”, afferma Menegotto.

NUOVA SEDE IN COREA DEL SUD
A inizio luglio NUM ha aperto la sua quarta sede asiatica, una filiale per servizi post-vendita, supporto applicativo e vendite a Seoul. La Corea del Sud è il terzo mercato più grande dell’Asia ed è massicciamente orientato alle esportazioni grazie a un settore manifatturiero eterogeneo costituito da società autoctone, locali ed internazionali, con una presenza particolarmente forte nei settori elettronico, automobilistico, cantieristico, delle macchine utensili. La Corea del Sud è ormai prossima a diventare il quarto mercato più grande nel segmento dei sistemi CNC. Finora, NUM ha fornito supporto ai propri clienti in questo Paese mediante le sedi in Svizzera e Taiwan. Dato il crescente numero di clienti coreani, il Gruppo ha deciso di investire direttamente nell’infrastruttura locale per poter offrire servizi più efficienti.

About 10 years before the numerical control was starting to move its first steps in the market, NUM (www.num.com) anticipated everybody and started the development of the first CNC controller. It was back in 1961, and since that moment the company has always been maintaining its leading position in this segment. Step by step, the company has developed innovative solutions, becoming a reliable partner for all companies looking for innovative solutions. “We have the complete range of CNC technology: controllers, drives and motors”, explains Massimiliano Menegotto, Managing Director & CTO of the Group. Today ,NUM is renowned as a leader in several application segments: specialized machinery segments for tool grinding, woodworking, gear cutting and rotary transfers. “Our strengths as specialists start where the strengths of others reach their limit, with great competitiveness in applications in the CNC production machinery industry. Our multidisciplinary know-how acquired in decades is reflected in all our solutions”.

REAL INNOVATION STARTS FROM IDEAS
The ability and the search for customization are included among the key strengths of NUM versus competitors operating in the same segment. NUM’s open systems, also thanks to the decentralized R&D structure that offers high-skilled technical staff in any part of the world, allow to customize CNC software for special machinery manufacturers, also on single machines. “In practice, our staff becomes part of the Research & Development department of the customer and, in this way, they help the OEM gain a competitive edge over competitors”, explains Menegotto. Thanks to this approach with our “customer-partner”, NUM has a clear vision of the requests and the challenges that the control technology in the machine tools segment will have to face in the future, a factor that allows the company to constantly and continuously improve its R&D program.

INTERNATIONAL PRESENCE
Headquartered in Teufen, Switzerland, NUM is an international company with technical-sales facilities all over the world: one in the United States, 4 in Asia, including one recently inaugurated in Seoul, 10 in Europe. “We are present in all the most important European countries: Germany, Austria, United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy”, says Marco Battistotti, director of the Technology Center of NUM. “The only production facility of the whole group is located in Cuggiono, near Milan. Most of our R&D staff work here, 17 people dealing with drives and motors and, since 2009, also with real-time development of numerical control. In Switzerland, they are specializing in PLC and man-machine interfaces, while another group is exclusively focusing on the development of NUMROTO software for the tool sharpening industry. As a whole, the group can count on about 45 people in R&D, without considering application engineers who customize our products in cooperation with customers”.

“If you want to optimize complex products likes the ones used for the automation of machine tools, it is not enough to simply combine powerful components such as machines, CNC control systems, drives, motors and measurement systems”, adds Fabio Pezzoni, Operational Manager and COO. “In order to ensure the profitability of a solution, it is vital to have a software system that is perfectly tuned to specific production processes and a team of experienced engineers with cross-discipline expertise and a deep understanding of the specific requirements of the application field and customer , pursuing a clear goal: optimize the production process as a whole and ensure its potential over the years, with the most advanced technology and perfect technical support. NUM meets all these requirements: it supports customers from project development to implementation and testing, up to technical assistance across the product lifecycle. NEW SOUTH KOREAN OFFICE
At the beginning of July, NUM opened its fourth Asian office, a subsidiary for application support, sales and after-sales service in Seoul. South Korea is the third largest economy in Asia, and it is strongly export-oriented. The country has a diverse manufacturing base of native, local and international companies, with a particularly strong presence in the electronics, automotive, shipbuilding, machine tools markets. South Korea is close to becoming the fourth largest market in the segment of CNC systems. Until now, NUM has supported its customers in the region from its facilities in Switzerland and Taiwan. With a growing number of Korean customers, NUM decided to invest directly in the local infrastructure to ensure that it continues to provide more efficient services.
